Contractors who are able to identify and fill gaps in the market should find themselves in high demand, as businesses struggle to source the skills they need.

Jobs site Adzuna reveals that the number of advertised job vacancies has skyrocketed to reach a new post-recession record. There were over 1.03 million registered opportunities in April, a year-on-year jump of 25.6%.

At the same time, the number of jobseekers has plummeted to fewer than 800,000 for the first time since the downturn. Some 795,000 individuals were looking for work, compared to over a million a year ago.

The report claimed this should act as a warning sign that the UK workforce lacks the necessary skills to fill many of the new jobs being created.

Andrew Hunter, Adzuna’s co-founder, said: “If we’re going to get behind the wheel of this recovery, we need to unlock the potential of our workforce, with more emphasis on the diversity of available jobs if only people are aware of them and willing to train themselves.

“This change could be led by the government, but part of it is a culture shift. We have the recovery we deserve – now we need to build a workforce capable of taking advantage of it.”

The news emphasises the need for contractors to specialise in niche areas and identify the up-and-coming skills that businesses are crying out for. By doing so, they can ensure they are always one step ahead of the competition and in constant demand. In addition, possessing hard-to-source expertise would be financially lucrative as firms will often battle with each other to secure the calibre of individual they require.
