A number of illegal immigrants have been found working at a Lancashire chicken factory, it has been reported.

Following a raid carried out by the UK Border Agency at Gafoor Poultry Products in Fletcher Road, Preston, 26 men and one woman were arrested.

Illegal immigrants from countries including India, Pakistan and Afghanistan are believed to be among those taken away for questioning.

Offences ranged from illegal entry to the UK, working without consent and overstaying a visa.

Commenting on the raid, a spokesperson for the UK Border Agency said the factory would be served with a notice of potential liability.

He added: "The employer has 28 days to provide the UK Border Agency with evidence that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out or face a fine of up to £10,000 per illegal worker."

A new civil penalty system for employers was introduced on February 29th for business owners found to be employing illegal immigrants.
