Construction contractors have been urged to ensure they use the correct personal protective equipment when working at height.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Guy Dale issued the instruction after a company was fined for an incident which saw a maintenance engineer's hand trapped in a forklift truck.

The accident, which occurred as the worker attempted to steady himself on a ladder, is believed to have come about as a result of insufficient task planning.

Mr Dale claimed the worker's safety could have been assured had "all the necessary equipment" been in place.

He stated: "Proper planning for such work and taking necessary precautions to prevent falls are often simple and there is ample free guidance readily available to help companies take the right action."

A new fall protection system was recently launched by the Sperian Protection, an industrial group specialising in the design, manufacture and sale of personal protective equipment.

Workplace safety is so important! The easiest way for an employer to prevent injuries in the workplace (and the associated costs that inevitably come with them) is to ensure that every safety measure is in place. Work should be one of the places an employee should expect to feel safe.
