A new survey by a leading graduate recruitment specialist has suggested that discrimination in the workplace is on the increase.

Of 200 people surveyed by Milkround.com, 86 per cent believed they had been unfairly discriminated against in the workplace, which could be argued to be a motivating factor for many finance graduates electing self-employment.

Richard Chapman of Diversity Milkround commented: "Increasingly candidates are becoming diversity-conscious and aware of corporate discrimination issues, and there are more and more key employers keen to support diversity, equal opportunities and anti-discrimination initiatives."

Ethnicity was cited as the chief reason for discrimination, with 40 per cent believing it played at part, while 14 per cent blamed age and 12 per cent gender.

Statistics published by the Institute of Race Relations show that the percentage of people from ethnic minority groups in employment has historically been as little as half that of white people.
