Many small and medium-sized enterprises may be taking short-cuts where information security is concerned.

New research published by professional services giant PricewaterhouseCoopers has indicated that almost on third of businesses have neither measured nor reviewed policies in this area during the last year.

A further potentially worrying revelation from the Global State of Information Security Survey 2008 is that two in five business owners do not know how many security breaches their company has been responsible for.

William Beer, of PricewaterhouseCoopers, blames a lack of accountability for many data loss incidents.

He suggests that Information security should be "a key consideration" for any business operation.

The UK government has been hit by a series of data loss incidents during the last 12 months, the most recent of which the Ministry of Defence losing personal information on up to 1.7 million applicants to the armed forces.

According to research conducted by Vontu, eliminating data breaches is important as they can undermine business confidence.
