Flexible working extension 'set to go ahead'
Posted on 3 December 2008
An extension of flexible working rights for parents with children under the age of six is set to go ahead next year, it has been reported.
The Daily Telegraph reports the proposed alterations to the flexible working rules, which could result in workers at umbrella companies being able to request an alteration of their working hours to fit round their lifestyle, will go ahead despite strong cabinet protests.
In an attempt to ease fears, it is believed a new sub-regulation will be implemented so companies can refuse requests they believe could potentially harm their business.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, told the newspaper: "Postponing a simple right to request flexible working would not save a single job in the small business sector.
"If such a request harms the business, the owner can say no."
Steven Kirkpatrick, managing director of Adecco Retail, recently said that people struggling to find a permanent job should consider temporary work.
