Flexible working 'to encourage fatherhood'
Posted on 23 July 2008
Proposed changes to the laws regarding flexible working will encourage fathers to spend more time with their children, it has been claimed.
According to the Independent, the government will as expected extend flexible working rights to all parents with children aged up to 16 following talks with trade unions this weekend.
It has been reported that an estimated 4.5 million workers could benefit from the scheme.
Speaking to the daily newspaper, ministers announced the proposals are aimed at recognising the importance of facilitating healthy parental relationships.
In the long-term, it his hoped reductions in crime will be witnessed as a direct result of measures to repair a "broken home culture" in the UK.
Enhanced flexible working plans, which include extension of the paid maternity leave period, have been criticised by some, with British Chambers of Commerce senior policy adviser Kieran O'Keeffe saying "there is no need for further rights to time off".
Flexible working options are often cited as a major advantage of self-employment and contractor work.
