Salary discrepancies between male and female workers can only be resolved over time, it has been claimed.

According to the British Association of Women's Entrepreneurs (BAWE), the gender pay gap cannot be legislated upon and as such.

Tania Hine, president of the BAWE said there needed to be a change in attitudes before more women were successful in obtaining the best jobs.

It is very often that women leave work for a while to have children and they come back and then they have to start somewhere lower down the ladder again."

"It's not something that can be legislated or dealt with. It just causes more upset and it is really not the solution, but slowly of course it will happen.

Research by Perriam & Everett recently suggested that women were better at negotiating their salaries than their male counterparts.

Self-employment may be one option available to ambitious employees keen to further their career prospects.
