Generic domain names 'can boost business'
Posted on 29 February 2008
Small business owners such as contractors or freelance workers can benefit from purchasing a generic domain name as a key marketing tool, according to Domainmonster.com.
As an effective method of self-branding, an online domain offers small businesses and freelancers the opportunity to advertise their services.
Matt Mansell, managing director of Domainmonster.com, said: "It's a call to action. You can publicise a ten-digit telephone number, but ultimately, a web address is something everybody remembers, especially if it's relevant. It's money well spent"."
An added advantage of investing in a generic domain name is that you retain the rights indefinitely as it's not tied to service providers.
"When you buy a domain name, it's yours to retain for the rest of your life if you want to," Mr Mansell explained.
Generic domain names have become increasingly popular in the business world, with some companies paying millions for a relevant address.
The highest price for a .co.uk domain name was recently paid by Cruises.co.uk for a sum of £560,000.
