Businesses can thrive during the economic downturn, providing they are well-managed, it has been claimed.

According to David Kern, economic advisor to The British Chambers of Commerce, recessionary periods "test management", but providing decision-makers are equipped with the necessary skills firms can perform well.

He added that businesses would "clearly" record higher profits if the economic climate was better, but said there was "too much doom and gloom around".

Mr Kern was commenting on the opening of the new London Westfield shopping centre, aiming to address concerns that a fall in consumer spending could cause difficulties for firms opening for business there.

He added that investment in the form of such developments helped the economy.

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics revealed that gross domestic product decreased by 0.5 per cent in the third quarter of 2008, following no movement in the previous three months.
