Government 'must help small firms win public contracts'
Posted on 28 November 2008
The government must help freelancers and small businesses to win a larger number of public contracts, according to the Professional Contractors Group (PCG).
It has backed the recommendations of the Glover Committee, which was established earlier this year to advice on this issue.
The government has agreed to twelve recommendations made by the committee's report over how to improve contractor access to government work and the PCG now wishes to see ministers follow through with this promise of support.
John Brazier, managing director of PCG, described the proposals as an "important steps in the right direction" to ensure that the public procurement market is operated "on a level playing-field".
He added that there needed to be "a transparent application system that does not discriminate against applicants who have spent the majority of their working lives in the private sector".
According to Contractor Calculator, freelance workers offer better value for money, a high quality of service, nice services and great innovation.
