Government 'must not delay' flexible working extension
Posted on 21 November 2008
The Chartered Institute of Management (CMI) has called on the government to remain faithful to its plan to extend flexible working rights.
Last month, the new business secretary Lord Peter Mandelson revealed that he was considering suspending the introduction of enhanced rights, a move the CMI has strongly urged against.
The existing proposals are set to offer the option of working non-standard hours to all parents of children aged up to the age of 16, but the institute wants to see this right extended to all employees.
Greater emphasis on the benefits of flexible working should also be provided by the government, the CMI has proposed.
Its comments follow the publication of new research which indicated that only 29 per cent of people support the government's decision to delay flexible working rights.
Some 57 per cent of survey respondents believed that workers of all age and stature should be allowed to deviate from standard hours if they so desire.
According to the official government website for citizens, employers, employees and their families can all potentially benefit from flexible working.
