'Increase in jobs competition' in the UK
Posted on 17 November 2008
Employers may reduce the number of new staff they take on and become more selective as a result of the economic downturn, it has been suggested.
However, according to Adecco Retail managing director Steven Kirkpatrick, jobs opportunities will still exist for the right candidates, despite the recruitment market being "more competitive than in a long time".
Firms were still looking to hire, he suggested, although they may wish to engage in "a little window shopping" before making appointments.
Mr Kirkpatrick added: "They will want to stay close to the market to make sure that they still have access to the best people when they become available, but will not necessarily be hiring as freely as they have done in recent years."
Figures published by the Office for National Statistics on November 12th indicated that the number of unemployed people in the UK, the unemployment rate and the volume of people claiming benefits all increased during the last month.
