Professionals with digital skills who are interested in contractor and freelance roles are well placed to benefit from a massive shortage of workers in the sector, new research has found.

New media community Chinwag polled employers, recruitment consultants and human resources staff on what they thought would happen in the digital jobs field this year and found that 97 per cent were already finding it difficult or impossible to recruit the right staff for digital roles.

It is having a damaging impact on many businesses, with 57 per cent admitting that the lack of staff with digital skills had acted a barrier to growth last year.

As a result, more firms are turning to contractors and other freelancers in a bid to find the skills they need, something that could come with a rich financial reward.

Some 75 per cent of those questioned said that in order to attract the right workers, they are going to increase the salaries they will pay this year.
