There may be a reduction in the number of IT contractor jobs in the future, according to an industry expert.

Gerry McLaughlin from ITcontractor.com has said the industry may be on the "cusp of a downturn".

He added that recent moves from businesses to "turn to contractors" rather than permanent staff could be "under threat" as managers may look to outsource due to the economic downturn.

Mr McLaughlin said: "When the economy turns down and companies can't sell more, they look to cut costs - and cutting IT contractors is the easiest means to do this.

"If the downturn persists they then look to cut their permanent staff."

A recent report by e-skills UK and Experian forecast that the IT industry will grow by 2.5 per cent per annum over the next eight years.

This rate is five times faster than UK employment as a whole.
