Using Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services is a good way for people in small businesses to communicate with each other when they are in different locations, the Internet Telephony Services Providers' Association (ITSPA) said yesterday.

Additionally, services such as having voicemails forwarded to email accounts as mp3 files or redirecting landline calls to a mobile were both effective for keeping remote workers in the loop, the body pointed out.

ITSPA council member Colin Duffy advised: "With voicemail, your inbound call is answered by the network, the message is left, and then converted to an MP3 file and emailed to you. So you can pick up your voicemail wherever you are, so long as you have access to the internet."

He added: "You also get call forwarding, so you can give out an ordinary mobile number. You don't want to give your mobile number as your contact number."

Recent research from T-Mobile has also shown that taking time out of the office is very common among UK firms.

Around six in ten of "senior decision makers" in small businesses were found to spend five hours out of the office each week.
