Building work on facilities for the London 2012 Olympic Games is proceeding well, the chairman of the Olympic Delivery Committee has claimed.

John Arnitt says that, four years prior to the Games opening, "progress so far is on track", with designated milestones being hit "in virtually every regard" thanks to the work of dedicated building contractors on-site, reports the Telegraph.

Adding that there are now more than 2,500 people working on the site, he states: "Over the last year the site has changed beyond all recognition – 190 buildings have been demolished, one million tons of earth excavated, soil cleaned of decades of contamination and two 6km tunnels to take power lines underground completed.

"Building work has begun in earnest, with construction starting early on the main stadium and the aquatics centre and construction of the Olympic Village is also under way.

Ten public milestones were outline d last month to demonstrate progress on the project, as attempts are made to assure the public the problems witnessed with the capital's most recent major stadia development – that of the new Wembley Stadium – are not repeated this time around.
