Many benefit claimants 'may never return to work'
Posted on 22 July 2008
Many benefit claimants are unlikely ever to return to work, according to one social care expert.
Lord Victor Adebowale, the chief executive of social care organisation Turning Point, has claimed that those people on incapacity benefits for more than two years are more likely to die than return to the workplace, reports Personnel Today.
Referring to the difficulties experienced by some in returning to work, he states: "Most of Turning Point's employment support clients, who have a history of drug problems, are desperate to get their lives back on track and move into work.
"Although some people are ready to get straight back to full-time work, for others, this would be too great a leap. It wouldn't work for employers and would be likely to push them back into drugs and crime."
Personnel Today reports at least 2.7 million people are claiming benefits in the UK.
Of this number, around 1.5 million have been doing so for more than 5 years.
