Migrants 'to make Britain Europe's most populated nation'
Posted on 27 August 2008
Economic migration will make Britain the most populous nation in Europe by the mid 21st century, it has been predicted.
According to the EU statistical office Eurostat, the domestic population will increase from 61 million to 76.6 million by 2060.
During the same period, the current chart leader Germany will see the number of residents fall from 82.2 million to 70.7 million.
Speaking to the Metro, European Commission spokeswoman Amelia Torres said an ageing of the population is "one of the major challenges Europe must face".
She added: "We want to carry on reforming pensions systems to ensuring these systems are sustainable in the long term."
Migrants coming to the UK to seek agency work will be the primary influence on a population increase, it is suggested, with deaths expected to outnumber births by 2015.
