A leading employment expert has claimed that unsatisfied workers need to get on their bikes and make a career move before they "stagnate" at their present job.

Alan Patterson, senior commercial consultant of Carlton Resource Solutions, claims that any move - be it sideways or upwards - must be considered for those feeling undervalued and under-stretched.

He added: "One of the most difficult challenges people can encounter in their professional careers is admitting that they've reached a plateau. Most people feel like this at some point throughout the course of their working life.

"You should realise that when you drag your feet to the office, feel unchallenged at work or lack a clear picture of where your career is headed, this lack of motivation will affect your personal life also."

Identifying tell-tale signs of working frustration, he singled out feeling underappreciated, underpaid and overworked, while signalling that looking at your watch every five minutes was also a reminder that it is time to move on.

A good move for those fearing professional stagnation could be following a university business education course online, Mr Patterson added.
