Mums 'heading back to work' due to financial pressures
Posted on 24 October 2008
More mothers are being forced to look for employment in an attempt to combat the impacts of recession in the UK, new research suggests.
A study conducted by Workingmums.co.uk indicates that 79 per cent of full-time mothers are considering going back to work, or increasing the number of hours they currently undertake, as a result of mounting financial pressures.
Mandy Garner, spokesperson for WorkingMums.co.uk, says the present economic situation "is not all doom and gloom" and actually presents "some good opportunities" for mothers to assess their working options.
She adds: "Employers should look at more efficient ways of working and how this can help them to become more cost-effective whilst remaining productive.
"[They} should not get caught out by reducing their resources. Working mothers are a fantastic pool of talent that many businesses should be calling upon."
For many people with child caring responsibilities, flexible working arrangements may appeal, with temporary work through an employment agency one possible option for those seeking to raise their income.
New business secretary Peter Mandelson announced last week that new flexible working provisions set to be introduced in the UK could be delayed.
