The National Specialist Contractors Council (NSCC) has urged contractors across the country to make sure they comply with the new regulations introduced by the Border and Immigration Agency.

From today, contractors could be hit with fines of up to £10,000 should they fail to make the relevant checks to ensure employees have permission to work in the UK.

A spokesperson for the NSCC told H&V News: "Specialist contractors are strongly advised to check they hold copies of the appropriate documents for all their workers to prove their entitlement to work in the UK and to retain them for at least two years after their employment has ended."

The only avenue for appeal an employer can take to an enforced penalty notice is to provide evidence that they took relevant steps to verify an employee's documents.

According to the NSCC, one in five contractors is unable to bid for contracts due to skills shortages particularly in relation to professional and technical staff.
