Construction contractors could benefit from the development of a number of new power stations in the UK, it has been reported.

The Press Association reports how research from US engineering firm Westinghouse indicates a large amount of work would be put out to tender should the new reactors be permitted.

Up to £30 million could pour into the UK economy; it is suggested, through construction and supply jobs during the development phase.

More contractor work could be available in the post-development stage, in terms of operating and servicing the plants.

The news provider reported that Unite national officer Dougie Rooney said 10,000 highly skilled engineering jobs could be created through the construction of new nuclear power stations.

News of new job opportunities for construction contractors may be greeted positively, especially after the Press Association reported last week that fewer workers would be hired in the sector over the next few years because of the economic downturn.

Research by the Construction Skills Network (CSN) indicated that a slump in the housing market would see the number of new workers needed every year fall from an average of 88,000 in 2009 to 42,000 in 2013.
