ODA looking for 'east London legacy'
Posted on 3 October 2008
The overall infrastructure being constructed for the London 2012 Olympics is set to "create a backbone" for east London.
Over 20km of new roads and 30 bridges are being built by a number of contracting teams to connect all the Olympic venues and villages.
According to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), it will "create new links between communities in legacy".
Other work being undertaken by the ODA includes water, gas, electrical and telecoms networks, together with a new electrical substation and distribution network as part of the long-term regeneration of east London.
David Higgins, chief executive of the ODA, said that "strong progress" was being made.
"While the flagship new sports venues we are building understandably get the most attention, the huge amount of work currently going on to construct new infrastructure and utilities in the Olympic Park is every bit as essential in ensuring we deliver a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Games ," he added.
The ODA was recently given planning approval by Broxbourne borough council for its White Water Canoe Centre, which will be built by large numbers of contractors.
