Olympic canoe plans given approval
Posted on 1 October 2008
The plans for the canoeing centre for the London 2012 Olympics have been granted planning approval.
Broxbourne borough council has given the green light to the plans for the White Water Canoe Centre (WWCC), which will now have to be referred to the government for the final decision.
The venue, which will be built by a large number of contractors, will feature an international standard canoe/kayak slalom course in a large parkland setting.
On the site there will also be a facility building, featuring changing rooms, offices, viewing facilities, shops and equipment storage areas.
Shaun Dawson, chief executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, said it will be a "zone of sporting excellence".
"The WWCC will be a world class sports venue providing the best training and competition facilities for elite athletes plus a fun and exciting recreational centre for the whole community," he added.
The Olympic Delivery Authority recently announced that all venues for the Games will be the most "inclusive and accessible" to date.
