Plant contractors 'succeeding' despite economic concerns
Posted on 4 September 2008
The plant hire industry is managing to thrive despite the effects of the credit crunch, it has been claimed.
CN Plus reports that the outlook for contractors in the construction industry may be brighter than first imagined, with mergers and major acquisitions driving the market.
Industry commentator Richard Sterling cites the takeovers of Alfred McAlpine by Carillion and Dean & Dyball by Balfour Beatty as prime examples of positive economic activity.
He states that specialised plant hire companies have created new employment opportunities by "buying up the competition" and moving into new geographical areas.
Mr Sterling added: "Work at height legislation and health and safety demands from clients have raised the profile of powered access and suppliers have been keen to cater for their customers' needs".
In other construction news, Department of Transport funding is set to see a £84.4 million busway scheme in Bedfordshire become a reality.
Career Engineer reports that Luton Borough Council will issue tenders to shortlisted contractors within the next few weeks prior to work on the project commencing.
