Plumbing is the profession least likely to be hit by a recession, it has been claimed.

Research conducted by Train 4 Trade Skills has indicated that there are currently more than 30,000 unfilled plumbing vacancies across the UK.

Despite the average plumber earning between £30,000 and £35,000 per year, it is suggested that increased access to higher education has contributed to fewer people entering practical trades.

Mike Head, Train 4 Trade Skills marketing manager, said: "With a conservative estimate of half a million jobs becoming redundant over the coming year, more and more workers are looking for career switches.

"Plumbing is well paid, flexible and plumbers are in demand."

He added that flexible training courses were an option for those who would like to investigate becoming a plumber, but were unable to commit to a full-time apprenticeship.

The Metro newspaper reported this week that emergency plans were being drawn up by the government to tackle an anticipated rise in unemployment in the UK.
