REC launches temp worker commission
Posted on 29 August 2008
The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has today launched its independent Agency Work Commission as it strives to ensure the future of the UK temporary jobs market, it has been reported.
Next month will see the second reading in the European Parliament next month of the controversial EU agency workers directive, which is set to grant equal working rights to temps who have worked in a role for 12 weeks.
Kevin Green, the RECs chief executive, said it was "time to concentrate on the feasibility of the proposed equal treatment provisions" in order that they meet the needs of employers by guaranteeing the continuation of a flexible labour market.
He added: We have a crucial part to play in influencing the progress of the agency workers directive in its future phases.
Mr Green proposed that the way to do this was by offering providers and users of temporary staff "a chance to weigh up the options" and give direct feedback to the government.
Gordon Brown announced plans to grant equal holiday and pay rights to agency workers in May.
