SMEs allow grads 'to make their mark'
Posted on 31 March 2008
Employment in a small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) can prove highly beneficial for the ambitious young graduates as it provides greater opportunity to make a lasting impression, according to careers specialists.
According to research conducted by the National Council of Graduate Entrepreneurship (NCGE), 70 to 80 per cent of the UK's fastest growing businesses are founded by graduates.
Margaret Dane, chief executive of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), commented: "The scope for making one's mark is greater in a smaller company one is also more visible.
"SMEs vary enormously in the businesses they run and how they operate, and there will inevitably be a high investment and high expectations of new graduates joining them, but the rewards can be considerable, both in terms of interesting and challenging work and in terms of personal development."
The 2007 UK Graduate Careers Survey revealed that final year students expected to earn an average 6.8 per cent more than in 2006.
