Stress cost the UK economy over £530 million in 2006, with millions of Brits struggling to maintain a healthy work/life balance, figures show.

In response, the government has issued a set of Stress Management Standards in a bid to reduce the impact of stress on UK business.

With the pressure of working life increasing among nine-to-five employees, many workers are deciding to pursue a freelance career that allows them to work around family and alternative daily commitments.

Although freelance employment has a level of uncertainty, it provides workers with the freedom and flexibility to manage and structure their own career path and work routine, allowing them to only take on projects of interest or financial worth.

In November 2007 the International Stress Management Association launched an inaugural National Stress Awareness Day to promote the importance of stress prevention and wellbeing in working life.

Common freelance assignments include bookkeeping, public relations, proofreading, researching and accounting.
