Professionals who are unable to find permanent work as the global economic slowdown continues may wish to consider temporary work, it has been suggested.

According to Adecco Retail managing director Steven Kirkpatrick, work through an employment agency may be the "ideal solution" as it allows individuals to gain experience in a variety of sectors.

He suggests this can be beneficial in the long term, especially for those who are unsure about what to do next in their career.

Mr Kirkpatrick added: "It might be worth looking at some additional qualifications that you can add to the mix in order to boost your chances. This shows an employer that you are looking at the bigger picture and want to build on your existing qualities."

According to figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on November 12th 2008, there has been a fall in both the number of people in employment and the employment rate since October.
