TUC: Equality bill will encourage fairness
Posted on 4 December 2008
The equality bill announced in the Queen's Speech yesterday (Wednesday December 3rd), will help improve fairness in the employment market, it has been claimed.
According to Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the proposed legislation is much needed, with decision not to defer an extension of flexible working rights also an important move.
He added: "The bill is also an opportunity to provide a clearer and more accessible legal framework to protect workers from discrimination".
Mr Barber said that the TUC welcomed the anticipated new powers in the bill to ensure that workplace practices change following tribunal decisions.
Among the other pieces of legislation proposed was a banking bill which will allow the Bank of England to lend to struggling financiers on an anonymous basis.
The increase in savers protection from £35,000 to £50,000, agreed during the recent banking crisis, would also enter the statue books.
