UK employees 'fearing redundancies'
Posted on 28 August 2008
Up to 13 per cent of UK employees believe they will be out of a job within 12 months, according to a new survey commissioned by the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The YouGov poll indicates that more than 3.3 million workers think their jobs are under threat as the credit crunch continues and the UK economic growth grinds to a halt.
Welsh workers are the most pessimistic, with 20 per cent expecting to be made redundant, followed by Scottish employees on 17 per cent.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said the findings indicated just how many people were "getting worried" about the impacts of the current economic slowdown.
He added: "The economy will inevitably slow this year and next, given the credit crunch and the impact of higher oil, food and commodity prices.
"But there is a real danger that if everyone thinks that the downturn will be deeper than it needs to be it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy."
Agency workers on temporary contracts may be less concerned about the threat of joblessness, with many employers looking for short-term staffing solutions to avoid the financial commitments involved with the hiring of permanent staff, reports Personnel Today.
