Work experience 'beneficial' to IT hopefuls
Posted on 16 October 2008
Taking a work role while studying can improve an undergraduate's appeal to potential employers once they leave university, it has been claimed.
Alison Clark, director at the National Association of Student Employment Services (Nases) claims that part-time work can help "develop their professional skills".
Advocating the use of on-campus job centres and agencies, she says they can provide advice, help with sourcing work opportunities, and guidance "on all manner of employment related issues".
In addition, they may help monitor the number of hours students are working to ensure that employment commitments do not overly impact upon study.
Research published by the National Union of Students and HSBC in August 2008 revealed that the majority of undergraduates continue to rely upon their student loan as a primary source of income.
The study did indicate however that up to 75 per cent of students work while they are studying for a degree, with around a third doing so during term time.
