Growing numbers of people are moving from the private to the public sector, according to new figures.

The Office For National Statistics has shown the number of people working in the private sector fell by 29,000 in the three months to July.

Personnelltoday.com reports this is compared to the public sector, which saw employment figures rise by 13,000 people in the same time period.

Carmel Millar, head of human resources at Surrey county council, told the website that there had been an increase in applications for roles previously classed as "having skills shortages".

"The private sector is feeling the impact of the downturn first," she added.

"There is a migration from private to public as people see it as less of a volatile option, at least during periods of economic turmoil."

Recruitment firm Hays Public Services has claimed that jobseekers with financial skills are being sought after by both the local government and private sector housing market, onrec.com reports.
