Eating lunch at your office desk is not good for mobility and an employee's health in general, it is claimed.

According to the British Dietetic Association (BDA), such a practice means the body does not have the opportunity to release endorphins.

BDA dietician Dr Frankie Phillips says spending long periods at a desk increases the chances of muscle tension and suffering from stress.

She suggests that regular, brief walks are advisable in order to stretch muscles.

According an October 2008 survey commissioned by ActionAid, 39 per cent of human resources staff claim not to take a lunch break.

Up to 62 per cent of workers across all sectors take less than half an hour's break at lunch time, the research indicated.

According to Liverpool John Moores University, two of the benefits of self-employment are the opportunity to have control over the daily workload and to work hours which are suited to the individual.
