The government should offer more support to disabled people hoping to start their own business, it has been claimed.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB),"innovative thinking" around welfare reform is required in the current economic climate.

One option for those physically unable to secure a job in the workplace is to start a home-based business, the federation claims.

FSB national policy chairman John Walker says "support and encouragement" should be given to disabled people in order to help them start their own business operations.

He added: "The government should specifically look at making access to funding for people with disabilities who want to start their own business a priority."

Last month, Phil Orford, chief executive of the Forum of Private Business, called on the banks to increase lending to small firms in a bid to steer them through difficult economic times.

He said overdraft survival packages were needed by many small businesses in order for them to survive.
