New jobs will be created in the UK after the recession as a result of migration, the Local Government Association (LGA) has claimed.
According to a spokesperson for the association, many people who have moved to London over the last few years are likely to return home as a result of job losses in the capital.
People may find work the regions, although the major movement will be seen in terms of migrants returning to countries in central and eastern Europe, he added.
The spokesperson said: "We expect to see rehiring picking up slowly in 2010 and certainly in London and the south-east, we are looking at 650,000 total jobs lost in the economy by 2010."
An LGA report published in November 2008, entitled From Recession to Recovery: The Local Dimension, claimed London is the region most likely to underperform the national average during a recession.
The study suggested that nearly two in five of jobs thought to be threatened over the next two years are in London and the south-east. LGA: Migration will create new jobs after the recession
