Employees in the UK could save more than 100 hours each year if they were able to work from home one day each week, according to a study.

In news which may interest freelance workers, employees travelling to London could save 11 hours a year by occasionally operating from home.

The research, carried out by Aastra, states commuters to other major cities around Britain could save 55 hours by working from home one day each week, reports Personneltoday.com.

Michael Calvert, UK general manager for Aastra, told the source, office-based staff face stress rises from daily commutes and also claimed businesses should offer freelance and work-from-home options.

He added: "Given that many of the UK’s commuters, if equipped with the right, readily-available technology, could do their job equally well from home, it’s a wonder why more firms are not enabling flexible working practices."

Money would also be saved by the changes, with possible savings of around £590 a year available, the source noted.

Last week, it was announced the government will hold a consultation looking into flexible working.
