Public sector organisations must continue to hire IT workers, it has been claimed.

According to Jeff Brooks, chair of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's (REC) Technology Group, many local government departments will see their budgets squeezed over the coming weeks and months.

Despite this, they must recognise the crucial role played by umbrella contractors and other professionals with IT expertise, he suggested.

Mr Brooks stated: "The government needs to continue to develop critical infrastructure such as the Government Cloud for shared resources and plans for super fast broadband.

"This will not happen on its own and it will need investment in skills and talent to deliver the systems we need in a global economy."

He said that IT professionals made a significant contribution to the national economy and this must be fully recognised.

The latest REC and KPMG Report on Jobs has indicated that the permanent and temporary employment rates were continuing to rise in the UK.
