How valued do you feel?
National Freelancers Day
On Wednesday 23/11/2011 this week it’s National Freelancers Day, an annual event established by the PCG to recognise the value that the UK’s flexible workforce adds to the UK economy. It’s a great idea and something the Parasol team, as an organisation that was set up to help freelancers, contractors and temps, fully supports.
There will be a number of events held all over the UK and Parasol will be attending the PCG’s Freelancer Lecture in London (come and say hello if you are going to be there) and although the day itself is a great way to celebrate freelancers, contractors and temps, it is also an opportunity to demonstrate to both Government and UK plc just how valuable a resource you are.
It seems like successive governments have failed to make the distinction between low-skilled temporary jobs and the highly-skilled, well paid professionals that the majority of you are. This is evident from some of the legislation we as an industry have faced over the last decade, e.g. IR35 and the new AWR.
If the current government remains serious about its plan for the private sector to power the UK’s economic recovery surely professional freelancers such as you should be the backbone of the plan by providing invaluable expertise and service delivery whilst also helping businesses to manage costs efficiently?
So what would you like the government to do in order to show you that they value you as a flexible worker as much as they say they do?
