The New Year is the perfect time to think about on what you want to achieve in the upcoming year and for many, this involves making resolutions about work. No matter if you’re already a contractor or you’ve yet to make the leap, with some planning and consideration, you can make your career work for you in 2018.

Evaluate your career goals

Now is the perfect time to look back on the past year in regards to your career. If you achieved everything you wanted to, set some new goals to aim towards. If you didn’t, try to consider why and whether there was anything you could have done differently.

Make a plan

Whatever you want to achieve this year, it should be practical and realistic. Think about where you want to be and make goals to help you achieve this. This could be a promotion or a change of direction entirely and having a number of clearly-defined steps means that you won’t lose focus throughout the year.

For example, if you’re already contracting through an umbrella company, now might be the perfect time to make the switch to limited. You can learn more about the differences as well as how to switch here.

Learn new skills

No matter if you’re new to your field or you’re an expert, there’s always something new you can learn. Learning a new skill is a good way to take control of your career, whether you're looking for a new opportunity or you're looking to become better-equipped in your current position. And as a contractor, employers will pay special attention to the skills you possess, so it's important that they are clearly displayed on your CV.

Consider going self-employed

If you’ve been thinking about going self-employed, an umbrella company could serve as the perfect first step. Working under an umbrella company means that you will have all of the flexibility that comes with self-employment. You will also still have access to employee benefits like annual leave and holiday pay. And if you want to take it slow, this could be the perfect step to help you become accustomed to working for yourself.
